Tertiary basalt near Bonn Germany
As the molten basalt cools, simple rules of physics control the formation of cracks that are very evenly spaced. The honeycomb effect is obvious. Bees instinctively follow the same rule that temperature does. In the case of bees, hexagons minimize the amount of honeycomb needed.
