The little birds, sparrows living in the derelict bluebird house by the canal, spilled seed from the bird feeder. Under the feeder the next year, a tall sunflower grew. For a time, its bright petals blazed across the yard. In the three-digit heat of summer the dried flower we nailed to the backyard fence. The next year a row of sunflowers leaned out from the wood. Sustainable seed culture. Didn't know the little birdbrains had it in them.
