The luminous machine
She was given it
by an angel on the
sidewalk downtown
in front of the new
pizza place.
The machine looked like
a cheap radio
the kind I used to have
it didn't work
power knob wouldn't even turn
probably wasn't a real knob.
She said
the angel's right there
but I saw
the homeless guy
who stood there every day
I didn't see any angels.
She gave me no peace
I had to take the machine
use it for the betterment
of mankind
I said what about womankind?
She said
Her too.
After she left
I opened the radio
inside was
a butter-yellow brick
yielding but tough
I tried to cut it: no luck.
The machine obviously didn't
work
the homeless guy
didn't want
"that old radio"
I set it on the edge
of a planter
in the pedestrian mall
it was still
there a week later.
So I buried it in the woods
next day it was
on my desk
clean as you please
dial still won't turn.
