Are these common? I found one in Texas as kid.

There are many different species, and they are found in many places. They are locally common, but overall I would say they are moderately rare. I have heard there are some very good places to find them in Texas, but I am not familiar with any of those places. The particular outcrop where this one was found in Alabama used to be pretty good for them, but now it's mostly overgrown with vegetation.
