The planet's eccentric orbit meant that spring came when the third-generation colonists were entering adulthood. One morning delicate pink exuviae littered the ground, and mating gigantic butterflies filled the sky. The eggs were so beautiful! When they hatched, the larvae burrowed into the ground. It was all over for 120 terran years. Turned out the pupae made good eating--in fact, they were addictive. People just couldn't stop themselves, and soon the dormant butterflies were all gone. Withdrawal hit for most people as the carnivores hatched. The feeding was good that year.
