The Unexpected Guest

Paid my three bucks for the scratch-off,
and I won! Free trip to the observatory.
Everything was so cool:
antique scopes, marble busts,
and the big one, staring into heaven,
they even let me look. I saw
galaxies, nebulas, Saturn ringed in ice,
and something very bright: Venus!
No, the tour guide said,
Venus isn’t up yet; well OK;
what I saw seemed brighter already,
much too bright to be a planet,
I showed it to her, See?
That’s when she screamed.
