We liked to put pennies on the railroad track and then try to find the flattened ones later. This was when they were copper through and through, and also when it was illegal to do that. That was half the fun. Doing something that was against the law, but that harmed nobody, and there was no way you would ever be caught. We always used pennies, because we couldn't afford to use nickels. They were useful. You could buy a whole pack of gum (five sticks) with a nickel. A penny would buy you a single piece of hard candy in certain places, but we rarely got to go to those places. I no longer have any of those flat pennies. It was a lot more fun to create them than to have them.
