The first and only time I was asked to take the roll for my homeroom to the office, which in those days was done by a student carrying a piece of paper, was very nearly a disaster. Luckily, so luckily, I was the only one who knew. I was halfway down the main staircase, almost within sight of the office, when I realized I'd completely forgotten my teacher's name. What could I do? I started walking more and more slowly, to give myself more time to remember. Fine, but what if I didn't remember? Should I just walk out of the school and head home [a 3-4 mile walk]? Go back to the classroom and look at the sign outside on the wall? Then I remembered. I rmembered her name! (I don't know it now.) I have never been so relieved in my life. (Probably not true, but this is the one that stuck with me.)
