Most of you know that I am a poet, among other things, and some of you may have enjoyed some of my poems. 20 years ago I suffered a spinal cord injury that left me in a wheelchair. And I was just realizing that nearly all of the poems I'm a proud of have been written after my accident. They are not about disability or because of it. I have continued to mature and grow over the past two decades, and I wish that everybody who suffers serious injury could realize they still have potential too. I know many don't; they feel that their lives are over, and many of these people don't have the support that I have had. These are the real tragedies. People with serious disabilities can do a lot, but they have to try, and they can't do it on their own.
