Walking Home
It was my job to prove the old woman torched the shoe for the insurance money. A neighbor said she had so many children she didn't know what else to do. That made no sense, and I kept digging. Come to find out, those weren't even her kids. She'd been running an unlicensed daycare out of a raggedy boot that should have been condemned years ago—it was a fire trap. Confronted, the woman burst into tears. My late husband left me that boot and nothing else. He was apparently a rather large fellow. I didn't know what to do! Huh.
A drabble.
