Casting the flat stones, worn from a thin sandstone bed, into the pond. Counting the skips, and always hoping for one more than we got. The young girl exclaimed about a fossil I showed her, "What a spiff rock!" Her good-looking friend, perhaps regretting our petting the night before, wasn't there. Looking back, the toddler assigned by the adults as our chaperone (they were in the next room), hadn't done a very good job. We'd kept him content, so they'd left us alone.
