The Mindless Gods

 

a new moon leers above the dreary hills,

where once the spires of brave Asterion

shone brightly underneath a youthful sun,

rich caravans once scoured the world; conveyed  

the choicest goods into her market square,

from all around came heads of state to swear

their fealty to the city of the stars,

adventurers sought honor in her name.

 

no more do rulers bow their heads, indeed,

few know her name, once deemed everlasting;

no prophecy foretold her doom, no curse compelled,

and yet one night a tumult shook the air;

by dawn the country folk, amazed looked out:

the city, imperishable, was not.
