Chindi, by Jack McDevitt, is one of the best hard SF novels I have ever read. It's a very personal story about a group of people committed to be finding intelligent aliens, and Priscilla Hutchins, the veteran starship pilot they hire, And, of course, aliens. The expedition is dogged by tragedy, but is also wildly successful. Throughout the book, Hutch proves her resourcefulness again and again, and the aliens prove themselves both alien and disturbingly human. Chindi is not the first book about Hutch, but it raises an outstanding series to a whole other level. The book is not brand new, but if you missed it, you owe it to yourself to find it. Five stars!
