There was the time, back when we communicated by letter and stamp, when we arranged to visit my sister in Tucson Arizona. We drove across Kansas, and that seemed so close to forever we didn't know how we were going to make it the rest of the way. If I remember correctly, we were driving a red Toyota Corolla, mile after mile across the desert, one kind of desert or another. We spent the night with friends in Colorado and went on the next morning, finally pulling up at a small house. We knocked on the door. It was pretty clear when we saw their faces that they had completely forgotten we were coming. In retrospect, it might have been a good idea to make a phone call before we set out. But, be that as it may, they were home and we had a great visit. We saw saguaro cactus, went for a hike in the mountains, and so on, as one does. Then, we drove back. Going out we took the northern route. Coming back we drove across Texas. And we had thought that Kansas went on forever! Texas really does. You go in the west side, almost all the way across, and at some point you turn left. Well nowadays, I could have texted my sister. Something like, hey, we're leaving tomorrow. We'll see you Wednesday and we're really looking forward to the visit. That way, if she had forgotten, and was on vacation in Mexico, well we wouldn't have had to drive two days to find that out!
