William Gibson, according to many the inventor of the cyberpunk genre (with publication in the early 1980s of Neuromancer), has a very distinctive writing style. He mentions very particular details in profusion, to the extent of mentioning things like what people do with their cigarette butts, and pays closer attention to attire than almost any male writer I'm familiar with. I'm sure that some people find this off-putting, but for me it puts the reader right in the picture and keeps you grounded; keeps you in the room with the characters. This is one reason he's one of my favorite hard science fiction writers.
