Deep South Con

This weekend we drove to New Orleans for the convention. We were there from early afternoon Friday through late afternoon Saturday, and then drove back. The guest of honor was Cory Doctorow, but his flight was delayed, and his appearance Friday was canceled. We saw him speak twice on Saturday, and he is awesome! His talks were about politics, not science fiction, because his most recent book is about politics. politics of the internet. The title of the book is the Enshittification. it is about how billionaires have destroyed the value of the internet, and how the US government has repeatedly stripped away regulations, which allowed them to do that. We also bought a really cool painting and saw a lot of neat stuff in the art show and the dealers room. The art guest of honor, who is an independent comic book publisher and writer, gave a very interesting presentation. We also went to a presentation about urban foraging. some places have made this illegal, for some ungodly reason, but in many places it's still legal and there are many many common plants that are edible. we tasted some elder flower honey, which was awesome. there weren't a lot of people at the con, because four or five other competing events were happening in the city on the same weekend. still, we had fun. I just hope the convention and the exhibitors made enough money to be satisfied.
