Prehisterical Pogo (In Pandemonia)

Walt Kelly, 1967, Prehisterical Pogo (In Pandemonia), Simon and Schuster. In this book, Pogo goes into the distant past, populated by ancient humans, dinosaurs, and so on. There is also a large centaur with a strong resemblance to LBJ.

The book begins with a trip to Mars. Plans for one, anyway. It takes two trys, but Mars, if that's what it is, is populated by dinosaurs, pterosaurs, diminutive elephants, and the like. Even human beans. Large dinosaurs hold skillets over active volcanoes to cook their dinner.

The scene shifts back to the swamp, where Owl spies Mars in the sky, intrepid explorers clearly visible. Reporters and cameramen rush to the scene, but soon a dispute arises as to the validity of the initial observations.

Back in the prehistoric, we find out why no dinosaurs were on the ark, and how hard it can be to learn Christmas carols in a hurry. We also meet someone with a strong resemblance to Chairman Mao, who rides a very peculiar horse.

The book continues to switch back and forth between the Okefenokee and what some people think is Mars and others the distant past. Finally, the wanderers make it home!
