Green River Shale
Eocene waves still crash
over these fish
Wednesday, September 24, 2014
Look, up in the sky, it's a whale!

True, if your definition of "sky" includes right over your head inside a large room. But this is a skeleton of the Eocene toothed whale Basilosaurus cetoides, which is the Alabama state fossil. This image is on the new postcard from the Geological Survey of Alabama. If you are in Tuscaloosa, stop by and get one (or several); they're free.

Salt Mountain
salt ponds cut so long ago
shaded by a mountain of
corals sponges snails and clams
the Eocene sea they lived in
gurgles up along a fault
bearing halite: that precious mineral
making all foods good
