Obnubilation
when the aliens came
there were more selfies taken
with their svelte silvery ships
and their impossible crews
than anything
they momentarily outnumbered cat pictures
on social media two to one
and when they started taking
our water
our wild spaces
the wind in our trees
patchworking and hole punching our world
we never looked up
from our flickering phones
not until the power grid died
by which time
all we had left to comfort us
were dogs, who, despite everything,
did their best
even when the food ran out
