Mom says that one day we'll see the stars move, or my children will, but I can't wait that long. Why did she leave her planet so I could waste my whole life in a can? I need to get out!! I need to get out now!

Conveyance

This ship never leaped up into space,
neither does she land,
her belly’s kissed only by stray ions,
and by pinpricks microscopic.

Inside her, people swarm,
parasites injected through her built-in wounds,
they grow til emigrating,
to a warm and weighty sphere.

She looks down,
maps their works,
sees them breed,
spread across the land.

Her empty body in its lonely orbit,
shining in the night,
she receives few visitors.
Finally,
                her lights go out

Somehow missed
our target star
the rest are gone
the freezers empty
I am writing on the walls
trying to explain
human history
to any who might find this
blunt metal pill
hurtling through nothing
before the heat death of the universe

Life Goes On

Hydroponics have gone Precambrian,
olive green cyanobacteria
coat the trays where tomatoes
and beans once grew,
and there's something ediacaran
about the thin flat worms
peristaltically climbing
the pitted walls.

Blue Star by morning,
red star at dusk,
the ship's new ecology,
metazoan free,
eats the controls,
and does not wonder.
