The Only Time Machine

We upload your consciousness,
it runs in a simulated 1960s Lagos,
the quaint elder city;
but it's totally cool!
OK, it runs slowly,
and it's grainy (a few details are lacking),
but the Uploaded never notice; they lack detail too.

Your body is destroyed in the process,
but it's immortality; don't worry,
we keep you backed up,
we have uninterruptible power supplies,
backups on our backups,
real-time monitoring of conditions on the drive,
and if you do get corrupted,
you never know it!

It's the perfect existence,
and the only way to go back in time.

Yes, Lagos-60sis the best and only,
although I hear someone is about to launch
a goth sim called Bombardment 1851,
which is supposed to really rock,
if you're into that sort of thing;
but, for a small fee,
we can make a copy of you for that platform,
to upload when they go live.

Another Living Fossil

It was all over the news:
13-foot mosasaur,
giant sea-going lizard,
fishbelly white,
not seen since the
comet killed most of the dinos,
washed up on the coast
of Mozambique,
coelacanth parts in its gut,
sucker scars all over;
like so many relics,
it'd retreated to the deep.

We should've known, really:
giant squids gotta eat!

The San
and our other early ancestors
were migrants
seeking a better life
over the next hill

What Comes Around

I’m sorry to report
the wildebeest, alas,
has been consumed, it gnu
too much, and tasted good;
the jackal (African,
coyote-ish) (hunger
compelled the savage beast;
it ate all but bones and
tendons) left what it could
not digest, a gift for
bacteria to munch,
some yummy leftovers
to birth a billion babes,
one-celled progeny to
decompose their betters.
