I blame pesticides in the groundwater. My neighbor's two pit bulls were no match for the 10-foot mutant shrews. We were saved in the nick by the mantis. But after what happened to Charlie, we dare not go outside. the food is running low. Jane wants to make a dash for the SUV. We can't wait for cold weather, she says. She didn't see how fast it moved when the Wilsons tried the same trick.

Thank God for climate change
If the ice had come again
And the oceans froze
The wind farms would have been crushed
By expanding ice
When we burned the last of the fossil fuels
The few of us left shivering
How would we have kept warm?
This Arctic blob ain't so bad
The wildfires are staying on the left coast
Summers are actually cooler in Alabama
And that sperm whale with 220 pounds
Of plastic in its gut?
I'm sorry, but I've got troubles of my own.

Vesta town council says
clean my yard
or it's a big fine
then they say hurling junk
into orbit
bigger fine
NOW they tell me
I think it's attractive
especially  Mom's old washer

plastic fish moves

a trillion flakes embedded
microbial gel sparks and flashes

the neural net learns
from every creature it consumes
dreaming of leviathan

the sludge reached the second floor
Wednesday, I think it was
we tossed the last of the witches in
with suitable words and gestures
but it kept on rising
we broke out onto the roof
saw nothing else
every direction
bubbling brown goo
we no longer could sprout wings
something you lose
when you make the choices we did
no choice left now
we dove in

everything was fine

By the time humans were done overpopulating their planet, and wasting its resources, no one else wanted it. Thus they avoided occupation and extermination by their technological, but not ethical, superiors.

On worm world, everything is made of, or from, worms. This is not all to the good, but plumbing and water treatment occur simultaneously, as the pipes clean anything out of the water they can catch, for their own sustenance. An important downside: if you flush very much poison down the drain, even your pipes may die. You may replace them, but worms talk, and they remember. If you don't treat your pipes right, you may never get clean water again.

Happy Birthday, Mom

Pretend I'm lighting 4,500,000,000 candles
one day in a year
Earth gets a cake, candle, present
She gives us 365
everything in those days
save for a bit of cosmic debris
brings us in, takes us out
takes us back, too
Earth Day isn't for Her
what harm can we do Her?
pollution, exploitation
we hurt each other
not rock, soil, etc
we hurt ourselves

That chemical waste dump, always knew it would be trouble. When the giant armored pill bugs rolled out of the humus and onto the highway, people laughed. They swerved to squish them on purpose. Turned out only the juveniles migrate. Who knew that the parents would care about their offspring? But then, who knew that 15 foot pill bugs with metal-impregnated shells would be rolling down I 70, heading straight for Kansas City?
