Floating reefs in Jupiter's thousand-mile-deep seas, hundreds of miles long and millions of years old, home to more species of organisms than have ever lived on earth. And this is where the kid wants to go for his 13th birthday. Why not someplace normal, like Disney World Ganymede?

their species prized gold
and stored much of it away
the sea holds more

under a kilometer of ice

kraken moves
maw gaping

sweet metal snack
oxygen burns
all the way down

stars shine into world ocean
thru closing hole
the boiling sea

what the monster rules
no longer everything

no longer enough

brine time

The sun bakes the collectors,
Feeding the high-rises to the south.
Trickle-down electronics feed the locals power too,
Bleeding a few watts to each plastic shanty.
Living on brine shrimp
mutated to catfish size
(when we say jumbo we mean it)
And halophytic vegetation,
The power's used to run lights and pump brine
for a little passive cooling.

At certain times and tides,
The shrimp boil purple, green, and gold,
Explode upon our minds,
Affect our vision heart and soul.
I see cities trees and countryside,
Gargantuan groves of plastic gone
That now the sun imbibe, and hide,
And strangler fig-like cables bulge on every one.

Don't try this at home or at the beach

Sharks have to keep on swimming
working 24 7, their whole lives
don't you think they get tired?
Never resting always moving
you know they get tired
the only reason a shark doesn't live forever
something eats it
some fisherman throws it down to burn in the sun
or it just gets so tired
it goes for the book
just for a little rest
so the next time you see a shark
swimming over the sand near a reef or wherever
stop it, as a friend
hold it, just for a minute
it will thank you

Noah Wasn't Enough

40 days start now
mudslides and lightning
the seas don't overflow
there's not enough water
but that old hydrologic cycle
she's speeding up 1000-fold
flinging seawater everywhere
haddock in Halifax
crabs in Cleveland
squid in Skaneateles
and whales in Waco
as if that town hasn't suffered enough already

a bounding conch eludes a predatory snail
it kangaroos across the prairie under sea
where conchboys ride proud tulip snails and jawbone yarns
but light no fires: they camp subaqueously

They really do this:

At least, the first couplet...

The water stings
Pulverized anemones
Pierce tender skin
Barbed cells
Fight on.

You Have Been Drowned

The lamps that are its eyes illuminate
Your facial wounds and raiment gone to rot,
Its arms your secrets probe, despoil,
Its horny beak will taste your gelid flesh.
The ooze become your cold and lightless bed,
Your bones abyssal mud betimes will drape,
Your shade the currents carry where they will,
The waves and tides will treat you like the rest.

In time you'll rise and move, perhaps to shore,
An avatar that cats view with amaze,
You'll drift along the lanes that you once knew,
And walk the garden path you walked before,
Through windows once familiar you will gaze,
A breeze spring up, dispel this shade of you.
