drought so intense
the lawn dried and cracked
yard-long gash

fresh erosion

counting the chlorine cars
in each freight train

bright
summer sun
parched brown grass
first
drops in
a billion years
Earth
steps in
Mars wakes up
look
up at
the brown planet

the rain slows to a trickle
grass blades peek from the flood
well into March
in the hottest year on record
we'd be listening to spring peepers
if we hadn't vomited poison for years
and killed most of them

Today's Forecast

Alabama's trying hard
to get its 56" in
before summer's drought

sloshing through the yard
in a 4-wheeled open chair
tracking mud on in
dirt clods everywhere

well, that's enough
it's almost true

We have entered those well-remembered times
when the politicians ooze and crack
staked out in the fields
where they can do the least damage.
The priests in their ivory robes
glide through the villages
bending down to upturned faces
tapping those who are worthy
of uplift to the Cathedral.
We bow our heads
pray the rains come soon.

or the front pushes the rain ahead,

I don't like it.

Queen waits for spring

the water keeps rising
but we take comfort in this:
we don't live in New Orleans
the dead won't go swimming
just cause the weather is wet
they live peacefully underground
as they should
not waiting in their little marble houses
for a chance to come out and play

Dodging the raindrops
I miss a few
I am just going to stay wet
until the indoor air dries me
rain in the age of wheelchairs
