Charles had secretly wished for bat wings his whole life, but never really believed it would happen. Then, on his 10th birthday, it started raining inside the house. Not water, but wings, hundreds and hundreds of wings. Not quite what he had had in mind, actually.

In this dream
I could walk
But I wasn't actually doing any walking
I jumped from sitting in one place
To sitting in another
What a waste of a good opportunity
To do anything at all

Dreaming about time travel
in the ICU
Should have gone back and told myself
Stop and drink another cup of coffee
On that road to Mobile
Wasted my time
Explaining to that waitress from Porlock
How I could prove
That I wasn't a time traveler
When I knew durn well
That I was

Sharks never stop swimming
if they do, they sink
sharks never stop thinking
nor can they sleep
but their whole lives
are waking dreams
of eating whales
and kraken
and things the world has never seen
not since the bomb that broke the world
65 million years ago

Dream of the Young Prince

You rowed her out onto the lake
under a pallid spray of stars;
the sweet heavy scent of gardenias
hung low upon the water.

She reclined on a silken cushion,
pipe smoke eddied,
spirits stared unblinking
from her kohl-rimmed eyes.

You laid down oars,
moved to clasp her,
woke naked on a hillside,
unfamiliar constellations
dancing in the sky.

Woke up in a strange place
My hands around someone's neck
It's face turning a beautiful cerulean
All of its eyes
Entwined with my own
But something was wrong
It was trying to speak
Then I realized
It was myself
And I could not say a word

help
help
she cried
in her sleep
monsters pursued her
I assumed, but she was at work
the usual stuff: she never suffered fools gladly

In my dream last night, I was at work, studying the small fossil reef I actually have been studying, working with the colleague I have been working with on that project, when I discovered something new and exciting about it. My old boss came in (he retired more than 10 years ago) and wanted to have a secret meeting about it, which I could not attend. While all this had been happening, I was listening to the soundtrack of the new Star Wars movie that doesn't actually exist. It had the original characters and original actors. So then I went into the room where they were having the secret meeting, to warn them about some scientific pitfall connected with the new discovery, which only I knew about. As I left the room, I heard "the new guy" (not a new guy in real life; never saw him before) very seriously say "the Empire is not what it once was, but it still deserves protecting." I went back to my office, horrified that I was working for the bad guys and hadn't known it.

For the 2nd night in a row I dreamed I was Merlin. Isn't he the coolest 1 in the story? And I had read Merlin's Bones by Saberhagen.

Make that three nights in a row now.

very strange dream last night. It started with some aliens  who resembled the Fae and they were not necessarily dangerous to humans but might be.. It ended up with a poetry contest challenge between them and us. I don't remember exactly how, but I figured out it was a dream, and then I woke up. But wait, that's not all! I then had a series of at least five dreams in which I was competing in a poetry contest against some people who seemed a lot like the Norse gods. In the last of these, my online poetry writing group was also involved. In the case of each dream, at some point I realized it couldn't be reality, because I couldn't change any of the poems, couldn't see the keyboard, and things like that. After each dream I woke up and realized I was in bed and had been asleep and the clever poem writing I had done was all for naught. The funny thing is, this was a poem I was working on last night, and was not yet satisfied with.  Maybe I can recall a few scraps from this morning's dreaming to improve it.

Loaves and Fishes

that chocolate cake
grew in my dreams
to 20 centimeters thick
still, I ate it all
and yet had some to give away.

The cake was real; so was the elevator that rarely worked (in the dream, but not the poem).

A dream

A real one, not a poem*

Last night I dreamed that my wife brought me a snack in bed. I dreamed that I ate part of it, but it was going be hard to eat the sandwich while lying flat. So I woke her up and asked her if she would raise up the head end of the bed (there was no controller within my reach). She pointed out that I wasn't in a hospital bed , and asked if I wanted extra pillows. Then I stayed awake for a good while worrying about whether I would knock the sandwich on the floor if I didn't eat it (it was on my chest) and whether I could try to eat it while lying completely flat, and whether if I just left it there till morning it would spoil. Later I fell asleep and it wasn't until I woke up again, at the usual time, that I realized there was no sandwich. There never had been.

These dreams, from which I awaken thinking they were real, started a few years ago. When I was in the hospital for 2 months, and came home taking some additional medications. Is that the cause? Hallucinations, disorientation, and confusion seem like unsurprising side effects of drug interactions (I take about 10 different prescription drugs). Something else is different about these dreams. In them, I am disabled (as irl), and they take place in something like the real world. Most of my dreams occur in settings that seem ordinary at first, but aren't. And in most of them, I'm my old self. These dreams are more amusing than disturbing, so far, but I guess that could change.

I can only remember having a dream that I confused with reality one time (before the last few years). It happened decades ago. I dreamed that single-edge razor blades with edges that were only one molecule thick had been invented. I woke up thinking that was a really cool thing, and it took at least five or 10 minutes to realize that it was just a dream loosely based on a story by Larry Niven.

*This probably makes a lot more sense if you know I am a quadriplegic.

Maybe a Good Thing I Rarely Remember Dreams

Dreamed I was driving around Tuscaloosa, which I later realized looked more like Lawrence, Kansas. In the dream I visited a sleep doctor. Then I woke up. I was going to visit the sleep Dr. to fix my CePap, so I took the mask off my face. I was preparing to get up. Then I realized I couldn't do any of that. Because I'm quadriplegic (I wasn't, in the dream) I need help to get out of bed. The sleep Dr. isn't open on Saturday, or at 5 a.m., and I already have an appt (required) for Thursday. I can't put the mask back on, and now I can't go back to sleep. But figuring all this out kept me occupied for far too long. Life can be entertaining, if you let it.

I won't describe last night's dream to you

But it involved JFK, Michelle Obama, time travel, espionage, babies sleeping out in the yard, and much much more. Almost as wacky as American politics has become lately. If only I had also dreamed about mind reading, teleportation, or space aliens….

doorbell dreams

fingers, long and
short, slender, stout
brown, prosthetic,
pressing or stroking,
eliciting a pneumatic answer,
tips tapping or striking
the cool round face,
and an aperture,
the dilation of it,
a slide, a swing,
one way or the other,
even prised open footwise,
bell circumvented,
ignored, might as well
climb in the window
if you won’t ring the bell.
