seaside bungalow on Titan

no chance of a house fire

but the smell in the mud room!

Lunegay; a poetic form analogous to a rengay. A rengay consists of a series of haiku-like stanzas interspersed with stanzas consisting of two lines that have a maximum of seven syllables each. A lune differs from a haiku in having lines of 5, 3, and 5 syllables, with the goal of making the stanzas resemble a crescent moon. They typically make reference to moons. A lunegay begins with a lune, and these alternate with stanzas of two lines as for a rengay. The length of the poem is indeterminate, but the middle is marked by two lunes in succession, as for a rengay. The lunegay was invented by me in 2019, though I haven't written many yet. A new one has been submitted to a magazine..

Luna missed the lifeboat

High Tide

All the arms of the moon
gathered the plump round snails
it was time to bring them home

Each snail’s ribbon of teeth
sliced through the land
wind-tossed ribbons of forest

people flew up into the sky
mingling with the wood
after the storm a jackstraw world

pin oak woman, sweet gum man
standing in sleepy ranks
under a snail-full moon

A look at Jovian astronomy as a scifaiku:

Europa’s
been slapped around a bit
she can’t leave her Da

Or does it work better as a lune?

Europa’s been slapped
too often
Jupiter’s handprints

Maybe a fib:

look
at
her face
Jupiter’s
worked her over good
but still Europa doesn’t leave

stir with life that longs for thee
your dark glory

               full
        moon shines
  monochromatically
sailing above the wind
   someone's running
       pearly whites
            agleam

Third grade field trip to the surface.

"People used to live here?"

Pointing up. "People used to live there."

shine on, you

The Great Race*

cyclists race around
the green moon
Earth looms vacantly

the field holds in air and warmth
riders soar above the world

grove of apple trees
amber waves
out Imbrium way

on and on they ride beneath
lich of their ancestral home

strange vermin creep there
ash blankets
Amazonia

blessed starscape on
the dark side
endless vibrant night

dwellings cluster thickly here
life forgets the horror past

hairpins scale knife-edged
mountain peaks
now mossed and gentled

leap cautiously now, for fair
Inertia holds sway below

this, the greatest race
on Sol’s green
gem, our only home

end of poem

You can't moon over someone
Whom you think you love
On a planet with such a dark dark night
With stars alone to light your way

How far must I have gone before the chronostat kicked in? The Moo, has almost no craters and the Earth isn't blue yet. There won't be any local repair shops to help fix this piece of junk. I knew buying a used time machine was a bad idea. I should have bought the 4 billion year warranty.

Pricked by a redwood tree
she became a tree when the moon was full
immobile, she couldn't make a kill
stood right there for a thousand years
at last, she fell in a great wind
crushing several campers
and was freed
only to feel the years
fall upon her in an instant
her last
