The sun started winking on and off, like a firefly calling his mate. We were all surprised when Betelgeuse answered, especially since the signal hadn't had time to make the journey. Then, suddenly, she was here, and it all went South in a hurry..

The stars wheel with the seasons,
Rising, setting, and back again,
Nothing changes as the years flow by,
Yet somewhere out there,
Right now,
Stars are born and die,
Whole galaxies are sucked in
where the suns don't shine,
and soon, very soon,
even protons will start to die.

Frogs live on no evil star

Well shoot, how could they, it would be too hot!
They’d burn their little tootsies, it would be a pain,
And for another thing, on the shuttle there’s no spot,
For any two-inch froggy ass, and like as not,
If there were, no space suits could be found to fit.
And alterations sure would cost a lot.

They got there, let’s suppose that for a bit,
Once there, how would they reproduce?
There’s no pond or creek on Betelgeuse!
Besides, their food is flies, but if they lived upon the sun,
They’d starve; no Diptera are there, not one.
Send a frog to space? You’d have to be insane!

I’d rather be a doggerel-spewing poet!
Oops, I fear that hope is vain.

Voyage of the Moon

a rogue star en route
to nowhere
might unhinge a moon

shuttles scattering
to the home
planet’s multitudes

ecliptic orbit
forgotten
the lunar discus

spinning to the stars
a cold lump
bases abandoned

preserved until
the Great Contraction
calls everything home
